Landon McNamara Triumphs at the 2024 Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational

Honoring Eddie Aikau's Legacy with Epic Waves and Courageous Rides

The 2024 Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational made history once again in December, drawing thousands of spectators to the shores of Waimea Bay on Oahu's iconic North Shore. Known simply as "The Eddie," this revered event celebrates the life and legacy of legendary Hawaiian waterman Eddie Aikau, a pioneering lifeguard and fearless big-wave surfer who epitomized courage and selflessness.

Held only when wave conditions meet its rigorous standards—requiring consistent swells of at least 20 feet (40-foot faces)—the Eddie is more than just a competition; it is a cultural celebration of Hawaiian values, unity, and reverence for the ocean. The 2024 edition was marked by epic surf, waves ranging between 25 to 50 feet, and the inspiring performances of 40 elite invitees, including the world's best big-wave surfers and a select group of alternates.

Amid the drama and adrenaline of this year's event, North Shore native Landon McNamara emerged as the champion, earning his first-ever Eddie title. McNamara’s connection to Waimea Bay and his deep respect for Hawaiian surf culture shone through in his fearless approach to the powerful waves. Over the course of the day, he demonstrated exceptional skill, timing, and bravery, culminating in a jaw-dropping ride that sealed his victory.

A Historic Day of Surfing

The day began with electric energy as the first light revealed monstrous waves rolling into Waimea Bay. Spectators gathered before dawn, creating a festive atmosphere of cheers, chants, and cultural celebration. As surfers took to the lineup, the scale and ferocity of the waves reminded everyone of the event's singular place in the surfing world.

McNamara’s standout performance included multiple rides that left spectators and judges awestruck. On one wave, he dropped in on a massive peak, navigated a steep face with remarkable control, and exited cleanly from a barrel—a near-impossible feat at Waimea. His composure under such extreme conditions highlighted his years of experience on these breaks.

Honoring Eddie Aikau’s Legacy

The Eddie is more than a showcase of athleticism; it is an homage to Eddie Aikau’s legacy. Aikau, the first lifeguard at Waimea Bay, saved countless lives during his career and became a symbol of bravery when he disappeared at sea in 1978 during a rescue mission on the Hōkūleʻa voyaging canoe. His family continues to play a central role in organizing the event, ensuring it remains deeply rooted in Hawaiian culture and values.

Between heats, traditional Hawaiian chants and ceremonies reminded everyone of the event's spiritual significance. "Eddie Would Go" was not just a slogan but a guiding principle for the surfers who pushed themselves to the limit, inspired by his fearless spirit.

McNamara’s Emotional Victory

Following the intense competition, McNamara expressed his gratitude and humility in front of an exuberant crowd. "Winning The Eddie is something I’ve dreamed about my whole life," he said. "To do it here at Waimea, where I grew up, and in Eddie’s honor, is beyond words. Mahalo to the Aikau family, my fellow competitors, and everyone who came to support us today."

McNamara’s victory adds his name to an elite roster of past winners, including Clyde Aikau, Greg Long, and John John Florence, solidifying his place in big-wave surfing history.

A Day to Remember

The 2024 Eddie Aikau Invitational was a monumental day for surfing, culture, and community. It served as a powerful reminder of the ocean's beauty and ferocity and the enduring legacy of Eddie Aikau.
